Griffiths & Partners is pleased to announce the appointment of one of their partners as Queen’s Counsel.
David Cadman QC was sworn in at a ceremony which took place in the Turks and Caicos Islands on 4th November 2021.
Queen’s Counsel are barristers or solicitors appointed by HM the Queen on recommendation following a rigorous selection process based on merit, proven legal expertise and outstanding professional conduct.
In his speech during the ceremony for David’s appointment as Queen’s Counsel, His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin, Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, made special note of the legal expertise and commitment over many years that candidates need to demonstrate in order to be found worthy of ‘taking Silk’.
H.E. Governor Dakin also made reference to the recent implementation of the Supreme Court (Appointment of Queen’s Counsel) Rules 2021 by which candidates are now required to demonstrate their eligibility for recommendation for appointment through specific competencies. A Selection Panel was convened in Turks and Caicos for the purpose of considering candidates under the 2021 Rules, comprising Her Ladyship Chief Justice Mrs Mabel Agyemang, Hon. Rhondalee Braithwaite-Knowles OBE QC (Attorney General), Eugene Otuonye QC (Director of Public Prosecutions) and Ariel Misick OBE QC (Doyen of the Bar). Recommendations for appointment of two Queen’s Counsel were announced in September 2021, namely David Cadman and Oliver Smith, a criminal practitioner in Turks and Caicos.
The competencies that are required to be demonstrated include being learned in the law, skilled in court advocacy, trusted by the judiciary and service oriented through the free sharing of their talent with the community and actively advancing their profession.
David Cadman QC is a graduate of the University of Durham. He was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 1996 and undertook pupillage in London. David practiced at the Bar in England in London and in Leeds between 1996 and 2011. He was admitted as an attorney in Turks and Caicos 2005 and returned permanently to practice here in 2011. In 2012 he founded Griffiths & Partners with Conrad Griffiths QC, which has since grown to become one of the largest law firms in the jurisdiction.
David has nearly 25 years’ professional experience in two jurisdictions and specialises in complex civil litigation and dispute resolution including property disputes, employment law, insurance, commercial disputes, judicial review, trusts disputes, divorce and matrimonial finance, professional negligence and civil recovery.
David Cadman QC and Oliver Smith QC were admitted to the Inner Bar of the Turks and Caicos Islands at the ceremony on 4th November 2021.
